Headwaters Montana Comments on Kootenai National Forest Draft Forest Plan

March 30, 2012.  Whitefish, MT.  Headwaters Montana released today its comment letter on the Kootenai National Forest (KNF) Draft Forest Plan.  (Download our comment letter here.)  The KNF has just announced that it has extended the public comment period to May 7, 2012.  While the public now has more time to comment on the plan, we urge folks to get their comments in as soon as possible.  Headwaters Montana has sent out an e-alert that can help you submit your own comments to the KNF.  Read our e-alert here.

The three-volume forest plan will set the management framework for the KNF for the next 20 years or more.  Headwaters Montana thinks the plan falls far short of restoring wildlife and watershed integrity across the forest.  In particular the KNF fails to indentify and map important wildlife linkage zones that should receive special management consideration.  The map above depicts Headwaters Montana's proposed (conceptual) wildlife linkage zones for the entire KNF.

The Draft Plan also fails to protect wilderness and roadless values by recommending most Roadless Areas for motorized recreation and failing to recommend a balanced Wilderness proposal.
